Mallorca’s Fascinating Caves

Mallorca is best known for its romantic bathing bays, but there are also fascinating caves on the island. In fact, there are over 5,000 caves in total. Some of them can be visited on guided tours. Others, however, are not accessible at all. Most of the caves can only be reached by diving. Three of the largest dripstone cave systems that can be visited are located on the east coast of Mallorca.

Marvel at the millennium-old stalactites and stalagmites. Also discover the underground lakes and bizarre rock formations. Let yourself be whisked away into the hidden cave world of Mallorca!

Cave “Cuevas de Artá”

The largest dripstone cave on the island is not far away from Artá. It is located about 40 metres above sea level. You can also reach this cave perfectly from the beach in Canyamel. This cave system consists of various cave chambers. These are appropriately named because of their unusual rock formations. The optical effect is enhanced by special sound effects and lighting of the metre-high stone columns. So, the impressive constellations of stalagmites and stalactites are breathtaking. Guided tours are also offered here in Spanish, French, English, and German.

Cuevas del Drach (Dragon Caves) in Porto Cristo

The Dragon Caves are located just south of Porto Cristo. They consist of four huge main chambers that are connected to each other. In addition to several amazing rock formations, you can also marvel at a total of seven underground lakes here. Among them is the largest underground lake in Europe, Lago Martel. It is about 39 metres under the ground and appears at the end of the tour. It offers a perfect backdrop for classical concerts. Visitors can cross the lake either by bridge or by rowing boat.

“Cuevas dels Hams” (Fish-hook Cave) in Porto Cristo

The “Cuevas dels Hams” are very close to the Dragon Caves. Only about one kilometre west of Porto Colom, on the road to Manacor. They are similarly well-known like the Dragon Caves. However, they impress with countless tree-like stalactite formations. Their design looks like a hook, which has given the cave its name. The formations of stalagmites and stalactites, which are around ten million years old, are highlighted by special sound and light effects.
